How to Create Your Own Cookie Recipe Using Only the Ingredients You Have On Hand

So, you’re stuck at home with the kids, everyone needs a break from structured learning activities, and the outdoors just aren’t an option right now. On top of that, you’re running out of food at home and it’s not worth heading to the store real quick for one or two items that they’re likely out of anyway. It’s time to get creative!

One thing I love about cookies, it that the possibilities are endless! All you need are a few basic ingredients (you don’t even need eggs) and you can create all kinds of interesting combinations. Today, let the kids set a few of their own rules and come up with a new favorite treat together.

Here’s how:

  1. Start with a basic butter cookie (chocolate chip cookie recipe minus the chocolate chips).

Here’s two options for you (each use different types of binders in place of egg):

2. Look around the house and find anything you can think of to add to the cookies (fresh or dried fruit, candy bits, dry cereal, seeds, coconut, etc).

Hint: The kids are going to want to put everything in the cookies all at once! Encourage them by either gathering the supplies they suggest or writing them ALL down on one big list. Then, help them group ingredients that go well together. Maybe you’ll make a few batches of cookies with different combinations for each!

3. Substitute the milk in the recipe with any liquid you have on hand (I’ve used orange juice, prune juice, apple juice, etc).

4. Follow the recipe (substituting your new ingredients) and bake. Enjoy!!
